My wife and I were very excited to celebrate her birthday at the incredibly fun and oh so chic Bar Tabu. Located at the northwest corner of the bustling Fulton Market corridor, Bar Tabu is a Latin fusion restaurant and agave bar that effortless pairs bite size bursts of flavors alongside an extensive array of cocktail and tequila focused choices.

The Yucca Fries go well with cocktails.
We began the night by choosing cocktails over a flight of tequilas, infused tequilas or margaritas. Bar Tabu’s featured cocktails standout for their clever and playful nature. The G&J, for example, balances Henrik’s classic herbal flavor profile with guava, passion fruit and lime to create the perfect summer drink. My Sombra Del Amor (which translates to shadow of love) was a much more forward choice involving Gran Centenario Reposado, a mescal and the traditional Mexican liquor Pajorote Spiced Dram. That plus agave, plum bitters and activated charcoal lead to a wonderfully full-bodied cocktail meant to be sipped among friends.

The Surf and Turf Flautus
Food options were equally enticing. Among the many shareable options are Pina Colada Ceviche (rum-cured kanpachi, charred pineapple citrus sauce, fresh coconut, avocado and toasted coconut-almond crunch) and Ropa Vieja Pierogis (braised skirt steak, citrus mojo sour cream and Salvadorian sauerkraut). We chose the Surf and Turf Flautus (duck carnitas and shrimp), Yucca Fries and Chips and Salsa. All three plates were exceptional with the pineapple-jicama-habanero salsa that accompanied the Chips and Salsa especially praise worthy.

Will definitely prioritize the Steak Frites for my next visit.
Entrées at Bar Tabu are certainly not necessary but still highly recommended. Our Sticky Mushroom (roasted portobello, charred broccolini, kimchi and spicy agave) and Seoul Street Tacos (pork belly bulgogi, kimchi slaw, gochujang and salsa roja) were divine. Their only drawback was they left no room for their Steak Frites or Rattlesnake Burger.

So many choices
Being true professionals, we did sample their desserts. While tempted by the Passion Fruit Funnel Cake and Basque Cheesecake, we chose instead their aptly named Churrorroulette which offers dark chocolate, dulce de leche and guava dipping options with one of them secretly laced with habanero which made for a spicy ending to our night out.

The smile says it all. Bar Tabu more than makes the grade and is highly recommended for a fun night out.
Bar Tabu is located at 401 North Morgan Street and is opened until midnight on Thursday and then 2 and 3 AM on Friday and Saturday. On Sundays they are open until 7. To make reservations or to learn more about Bar Tabu click here.
