Come along with me on an unforgettable journey through Canada’s cosmopolitan heartland.
Ever since I watched Elizabeth Manley dazzle the world with her silver medal-winning performance at the 1988 Winter Olympics, Calgary has been on my travel bucket list. Images of the Calgary Stampede—wild rodeo rides, cowboy hats, and western flair—captured my imagination. I remember thinking, “I want to go there.” And now, I finally have.
While the city was buzzing in preparation for the legendary Calgary Stampede (kicking off this year on July 4), I discovered that Calgary offers so much more—majestic mountain views, rich Indigenous heritage, inventive cuisine, and a vibe that blends modern elegance with plenty of warm, welcoming Canadian hospitality.
Go Wild at The Dorian, An Autograph Collection Hotel

Whimsical, opulent, and utterly original, The Dorian is no ordinary hotel. Inspired by Oscar Wilde’s “The Picture of Dorian Gray,” this MICHELIN Key-awarded boutique hotel (and the only Michelin Starred Hotel in Calgary) immerses guests in literary luxury — from peacock feathers on your pillow to a copy of Wilde’s novel bedside. My room was sleek and supremely comfortable, featuring a charming beverage cart, Aesop bath products, and impressive city views.
Dining at The Dorian is equally memorable. From refined bites at Prologue Cafe to panoramic brunches at Lunch on 27 and exquisite dinners at The Wilde on 27, each meal is a masterpiece. If you’re looking for a hotel that entertains, delights, and surprises, this is it.
Saddle Up: The Calgary Stampede Spirit

Calgary lives and breathes the Stampede, even when it’s not in full swing. While I missed the 10-day spectacle dubbed “The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth,” a stroll through Stampede Park made me feel part of its legacy. The exhibits and rodeo memorabilia brought to life the heart-pumping thrills of barrel racing, chuckwagon races, and bronco busting. Add midway rides, world-class music, and food indulgences — and it’s no wonder over a million visitors flock here each July.
Sky-High Views: Calgary Tower
Built in 1968, the Calgary Tower still reigns as a beloved city icon. At over 600 feet tall, it offers 360-degree views of downtown, the Bow River, and the distant Rocky Mountains. Stepping onto the glass floor of the observation deck was both terrifying and thrilling—those tiny cars below reminded me just how high I really was!

For an unforgettable dinner, try Sky 360, the tower’s revolving restaurant. As the city slowly spun beneath me, I watched the sun dip below the Rockies and the city lights twinkle to life.
Cast a Line on the Bow River

One of Calgary’s most peaceful yet invigorating experiences? Fly fishing on the Bow River. Clad in brown waders, I stood on the bank under the George King Bridge, casting my line under the guidance of Quinn Soonias, owner of Drift Out West. His patience and expertise made the experience both educational and calming. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned angler, a guided float down the Bow is a must. Drift Out West offers both half/full day excursions and provides all of the necessary gear.
Cruising the City Retro Style
Want to feel like a movie star while sightseeing? Book a ride with Rocky Mountain Sidecar Adventures. My vintage-style motorcycle sidecar adventure through Calgary’s hills and neighborhoods was part thrill ride, part time machine. Wind in my hair and city views all around — it’s the most fun you can have on three wheels.

A World of Flavor: Calgary’s Culinary Scene
Calgary’s food scene is a global smorgasbord — Asian, Mediterranean, Latin American, and more—all with a Canadian twist. Here are a few favorites:
Fortuna’s Row: A trendy Latin American supper club where ceviches, grilled chicken, and lomo saltado shine in a relaxed, stylish setting along the riverfront.

Orchard: A romantic Mediterranean oasis adorned with chandeliers and cascading greenery. My open-faced apple chicken brie sandwich was rich and delicious, while the ricotta gnocchi melted in my mouth.

Major Tom: A culinary high note—literally and figuratively. Located on the 40th floor of Stephen Avenue Place, this David Bowie-inspired fine-dining gem was named Canada’s Best New Restaurant in 2022. The Alberta beef, served with MT steak butter, was perfection. Try the potato donuts, cucumber salad, and sublime mocktails. For dessert, the Baked Alaska reigns supreme!

Final Thoughts: Calgary Surprises and Delights
Calgary surprised me in all the best ways. With its sophisticated downtown, welcoming locals, western spirit, and natural beauty, it’s a destination that offers something for everyone. Whether you’re casting a fly, sipping cocktails sky-high, or riding shotgun in a sidecar, Calgary promises an unforgettable adventure. For more information, go to visitcalgary.com
