Artist Greg Strawn finds strength in his latest release, “Weaker Every Day.”
Greg Strawn is a musician who bares his soul through lyrics and melodies that are relatable, raw and empowering. An artist and farmer, the Oklahoma-born musician stepped away from music only to be drawn back in 14 years later. His latest release seems to tell it all with its title, “Weaker Every Day.” But there’s nothing weak about Strawn. Overcoming addiction and the death of his parents, he’s come out on top to find strength in music. He says, “Weaker Every Day was written at a stressful time. Trying to deal with my aging parents’ declining health, taking care of a family farming operation and raising my daughter. Lots of negative talk from outsiders on how I handled my parents’ situation. With all that, it seemed hopeless. I wrote the song on my front porch one Sunday evening.” With resilience and grit, Strawn doesn’t sugarcoat things and hopes that others will find strength through his story and lyrics. The country crooner shares his story with Splash.

The lyrics are really powerful and really tell a story of going through a hard time. Can you share the place you were in when you wrote the song?
I had to make tough decisions for my parents’ care. Their health went down very quickly, and both at the same time. With all the other things that were going on with the cotton harvest and the everyday struggles of balancing farm and family life, the extra pressure of taking care of them just weighed heavily on me. People from the outside weighed in on what they thought I was doing wrong. My mother was not accepting of her health conditions and criticised everything I did. One Sunday afternoon, I sat on my front porch with my guitar and wrote “Weaker Every Day”
When you listen to the lyrics now, what is the message you hear? Do you view it differently now that you’re further removed from this time in your life?
I just remember the despair and hopelessness I felt at the time. The view is still the same. My father passed not long after that but my mother is still living. She still struggles with accepting her health issues, and can be very critical at times. The moment is still fresh in my mind although some of the adversities have changed.

What is the message you hope to share with listeners through your music?
I just hope they can relate to my life circumstances. We all struggle and it can be comforting to know that others share similar struggles and have kept moving forward.
Who are you hoping to reach with this message?
I know many people face overwhelming difficulties in their life. Others might not relate or might judge them. Weaker Every Day speaks to those people, there are one’s that can relate.
Tell us how you found your passion for music. And how has it shaped your life?
I have loved music for as long as I remember. My sister and I used to listen to music and pretend we were the singers. I knew I would eventually perform for an audience just didn’t think it would take as long as it has. Life had other plans for most of my adult life.

Who are your musical inspirations?
KISS, Waylon Jennings, and Hank Williams Jr. early. I also really like Elton John and his piano playing from his early albums.
What do you hope to achieve with your career in the future?
I would love to pursue music full time, though I don’t know how soon that would be possible if at all. I plan to continue to write and record and play live shows as much as I can.
If you could duet with one performer (past or present), who would that be? And what would you sing?
I had a dream that I got to get on stage with Hank Williams Jr. In the dream, we sang “Od’d In Denver.” That would be great. Just about any of his other songs would work too.
